Childhood Anxiety: Part 3 - Will it get better by itself and is it possible to cure it?
Aug 16, 2024Welcome to Part 3 of my mini-series on the top ten questions that parents of anxious children frequently ask.
This week, I'm addressing two critical questions:
Will my child's anxiety naturally improve over time? and
Is it possible to cure childhood anxiety?
These are common concerns for parents dealing with an anxious child. It's understandable to hope that anxiety might resolve on its own, but if you've listened to my free 3-part audio series on the most common mistakes parents of anxious children make, you'll know that I'm a strong advocate for taking early action to address anxiety before it becomes more entrenched. In today's video, I delve into the reasons why.
Some people suggest that there isn't a definitive "cure" for childhood anxiety and that the focus should be on equipping children with effective coping strategies. Personally, I believe that the root cause of the anxiety plays a significant role, but in the vast majority of cases I've encountered—hundreds over my 30-year career!—anxiety can indeed be overcome with the right approach (which I guide parents through step-by-step in our online course, From Fearful to Fearless, designed to help anxious children and their families. Enrollment will be opening again very soon).
In this week's video, I take a closer look at both of these questions. I explain why it's not always realistic to expect children to simply outgrow their anxiety and why professional intervention is often necessary to effectively treat childhood anxiety. Additionally, I cover the various treatment options available and emphasize the importance of seeking help early.
