When parents separate and/or divorce, it can be a deeply distressing experience for their children and can increase the risk of emotional, behavioural and developmental difficulties for them.

But these outcomes are not inevitable, and I am a firm believer that it it the way the split and its aftermath is handled by parents, and not always the split itself, that determines how much harm is done to their children.

In today's video - which is the first part of a 3 part series - I explore 5 factors to consider when thinking about how to protect children from any harmful effects.

You might also like to watch my video entitled 'How to Break Bad News to a Child' for tips on ways to tell your child about the separation/divorce in a sensitive way.
